As if starting a baby on a healthy diet from birth wasn’t enough, more and more studies are showing a mother’s diet and health can also have long term effects on her baby.  Previous studies have acknowledged that if a woman is carrying extra weight upon conception, and throughout pregnancy, it can set her up for metabolic disorders later in life.  A recent study notes the extra weight may affect the baby long term as well. Study Finds Probiotic Use in Mothers Limits Eczema in their Babies

Eczema is a common term which includes a variety of different skin conditions.  Lots of kids develop some form of eczema in early childhood yet many will eventually outgrow the condition.  Eczema in infants is typically dry, itchy skin which can develop anywhere on their bodies.  Typically, eczema is treatable but nonetheless pretty uncomfortable for a baby.  What if mothers could help prevent it from even ocurring? A Look at Caffeine Consumption and Miscarriage Risk

infant development, parentingExpecting mothers tend to pay extra special attention to what they are eating drinking throughout their pregnancies.  This month, 2 very opposing studies were released in regards to an expecting mother’s caffeine consumption and risk of miscarriage.  While one study claims moderate caffeine intake does increase the risk of pregnancy complications, the other states just the opposite.

Every parent secretly hopes their child will like fruits and vegetables and eat them without a struggle.  According to a new study, you may be able to increase the odds of your child actually liking his veggies.  New research reported in the December issue of the Journal of Pediatrics states that if you are breastfeeding, you can help create a taste for healthy foods in your infant by eating them yourself.

More Experts Weigh In On Pregnancy and Fish Consumption

The continued study of the benefits of fish oils and infant development has raised new questions.  If fish is so good for pregnant and nursing mothers, and subsequently for babies, should mothers eat more fish while pregnant and nursing? To avoid consuming large amounts of mercury in fish, the FDA advises pregnant and nursing mothers not to consume more than 12 ounces of fish per week. Despite the FDA’s recommendations, however, a coalition of top scientists declared in a public advisory that pregnant and breastfeeding women should consume at least 12 ounces of fish per week.  With all this conflicting information, how does a mother know what’s best to eat?
