Iron is a vital mineral requiring a delicate balance in the body.  While too little iron can cause developmental issue in infants, too much can also have adverse effects.  Many foods for infants and children are fortified with iron because many children in earlier decades were deficient.  But has all this fortification lead to kids getting too much iron? UN Adopts New Baby Formula Standards

organic baby food, parentingResearch finds that when it comes to feeding your baby, breast is best.  However, for some women breastfeeding is not an option leading to the difficult decision of which formula to choose.  Infant formula is ever-evolving as formula manufacturers attempt to provide a baby formula similar to breast milk containing optimum nutrients.  It appears that the infant formula standards and physician recommendations seem to change as rapidly as the formulas themselves.

organic baby foodFollowing on the heels of the new American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)new infant formula recommendations comes another perspective about organic infant formula.  The New York Times headlined a story today of a self-described “yoga mom″ who conscientiously chose organic infant formula for her baby, but didn’t realize that same formula contained cane sugar.

Infant formula with added Fish Oil May Help Infants

Scientists and researchers alike have long been working towards creating an infant formula that is comparable to breast milk.  A recent move in this direction is the addition of omega-3 fatty acids to infant formula.  These long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids may help infants produce more proteins in muscle cells, regulate blood sugar, and increase IQ.
