Healthy Pregnancy Eating Guide: Putting it All Together

Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

The Healthy Pregnancy Eating Guide has covered the basics, the nutrients, and the pregnancy power foods but if this feels like too much information then you can say ‘talk to the hand’.  Yep, that’s right – that phrase finally has an appropriate use.  If calorie reading and memorizing food sources of nutrients feels like a mission impossible right now, which for some mums it does, you can simply talk to the hand to help you remember what you need to eat every day for a healthy pregnancy and to support your growing tummy.

Remember those hand outlines you did as kid? Typically they were reduced to a holiday turkey picture but now there is another use. You can use the picture below if you’d like or break out the crayons and use your dominant hand to trace the outline of your non-dominant hand on a plain piece of paper (or construction paper if you want to have fun with it).  Starting with the thumb and moving toward the pinky, label the following:

 1. Water   2.Whole Grains  3.Veggies/Leafy Greens   4. Fruit/Vitamin C  5. Protein

Then, in the center of the hand write in prenatal vitamins. There you have it – your Healthy Pregnancy Eating Guide right in the palm of your hands.  Keep this handy picture on the fridge to remind you to eat at least a few servings from each of those groups every day.  The vitamin reminder is there to help the mommy brain that may lapse on actually taking those vitamins even though they are sitting right on the counter.  For specific serving sizes and ideas for foods you should review the nutrients section of the Healthy Pregnancy Feeding Guide while using this simple tool to help you put it all together.

Thursday, March 10th, 2011

Mum Mum’s Healthy Pregnancy Eating Guide has covered power pregnancy foods, the basics, and the nutrients.  So how does this all equate to what to eat while pregnant? It is easier for most women to focus on actual foods rather than calories or specific nutrients.  The good news is eating a balanced diet should provide most mums with all the nutrients they need while provided you with some much needed energy.   Here are the basic food groups and how much expecting mums should aim to eat for a healthy pregnancy: (more…)

Healthy Pregnancy Eating Guide: The Nutrients

Sunday, March 6th, 2011

Mum Mum’s Healthy Pregnancy Eating Guide started with the basics and is now getting specific with the nutrients needed for pregnancy.  While it cannot be emphasized enough that a balanced diet is healthful for anyone at any life stage, it is of particular importance during pregnancy.  Know that eating a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, lean protein, and dairy (or calcium rich foods) along with prenatl vitamins should give you the nutrition you need.  There are many nutrients we need to eat daily but there are a few that are needed in extra amounts during pregnancy to support the growing fetus: (more…)

Amongst the many changes taking place throughout your body during pregnancy, food cravings tend to top the list.  Nutrient requirements increase during pregnancy, so it can be difficult to balance the foods you need with the foods you want especially after recent studies have shown to be mindful of weight gain during pregnancy if you are overweight. A well balanced diet rich in whole grains, nuts, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and lean meats will provide you with what you need, but there are a few foods that pack a lot of nutrients in smaller amounts.  Here are 8 power packed pregnancy foods that are both delicious and nutritious: (more…)

Severely Obese Women May Need to Gain Less Weight during Pregnancy

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

As Mum Mum’s recently reported, being obese at time of conception may increase the risk of obesity for the baby later in life.  As much more research is finding adverse effects of high maternal weights, the next logical question is: so how much weight does a woman need to gain during pregnancy if she is overweight? A recent study looked into that question directly.  (more…)

Losing Body Fat before Baby Can be Beneficial for Baby, Rat Study Shows

Monday, February 21st, 2011

As if starting a baby on a healthy diet from birth wasn’t enough, more and more studies are showing a mother’s diet and health can also have long term effects on her baby.  Previous studies have acknowledged that if a woman is carrying extra weight upon conception, and throughout pregnancy, it can set her up for metabolic disorders later in life.  A recent study notes the extra weight may affect the baby long term as well. Rocking the Cradle After 45

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

The age at which women become mothers has steadily been increasing over the past few years.  Lots of women are putting motherhood on hold to focus on their careers, but how long can having children really be put on hold? There is the ever present notion that fertility does decline with age, while risks increase yet a recent study found pregnancy later in life is safer than we have previously known. (more…)

Breastfeeding Mothers Don’t Get Less Sleep

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

Mum Mum’s recently reported that women respond more than men to baby’s needs during the night. Although women may not be surprised by that study, it is certainly a concern when planning to have a baby since generations of mums warn there will be many sleepless nights ahead.  This concern often affects a woman’s choice to breastfeed or not, thinking breastfeeding might mean even less sleep but a recent study found this is not the case at all. Wake Up Mum; Gender Differences in Accepting Sleep Interruptions

Monday, November 22nd, 2010

Oh, the notorious sleepless nights of parenthood.  Combine that with mother’s intuition and it is a wonder new mums get any shut eye at all.  It seems that when it comes to night time cries from baby, mums are more likely to respond.  No offense to dads of course, but new research discovered that even if both parents are working mums are twice as likely to interrupt their sleep to care for others.
