Vitamin D Supplements found to be Safe for Pregnant Women
Vitamin D has come a long way, baby. As we learn more about the wonders of vitamin D, the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) or minimum amount of vitamins and minerals we should consume daily, continues to increase. In 2010, the DRI for vitamin D was increased from 400 IU (international units) to 600 IU daily. High levels of vitamin D were once thought to be toxic, but more and more research concludes ‘optimum’ levels far surpass even the current DRI. It was also previously thought that expecting women should not take extra vitamin D but a recent study found that is yet another vitamin D misconception. (more…)

Friday, June 3rd, 2011If it seems a lot more kids have food allergies these days that is because they do; the number has gone up 18% over the past decade and managing food allergies is an important part of childhood nutrition. Of course the amount and type of ‘food allergy friendly’ foods rapidly increased as well leaving mums of food allergic kids with many more grocery options. What has remained the same, however, is managing food allergies. Food allergy research will continue but it will be sometime before food allergies are eradicated or entirely preventable. U.S. Pushes School Cafeterias towards Healthier Offerings

There are, however, times when you cannot control what your child is being fed particularly when the school aged years start and your child is eating lunch at the cafeteria. While we all may have fond memories of our school lunch ladies, what is being served isn’t ultimately up to them but rather what school district funding will allow.
