Recommendations for Fluoridated Toothpaste Use in Children

Long before the plastic bottle debate arose was the ongoing quandary of fluoridated toothpaste and children. Fluoride, when used topically, can help prevent tooth decay yet too much taken internally can have the opposite effecting leading to mottling or tooth discoloration. US Health Officials Say More Study Needed on Health Effects of BPA

Last year, stories regarding the chemical bisphenol A, or BPA, were abundant for several months causing plastic bottle manufacturers to change their ways particularly baby product makers. The debate was heated as proponents of the removal of BPA from baby and children’s products claimed there was plenty of evidence BPA was potentially harmful to children, yet chemical companies argued the research was inconclusive. BPA is back in the news again this week and US Health Officials announced Friday that more research needs to be conducted. (more…)

Consumer Reports Issues Safe Baby and Child Toy Shopping Guidelines

 Toy safety has come a long way since last year, particularly the passing of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) which shifted safety standards from voluntary to mandatory.   In addition to the CPSIA, other laws and regulations cracked down on the harmful chemicals once rampant in children’s toys: lead and phthalates. Ingestion of either or both chemicals can be toxic, and since babies put everything in their mouth ingestion was pretty likely. (more…)

How Much Water Do Babies Need to Drink?

The hot summer weather is still here, allowing families to maximize the longer days before its time to head back to school.  Mum Mum’s recently discussed how to keep babies cool in the summer heat raising a poignant question: just how much water do babies need to drink to ensure they are hydrated?   A pediatrician from CNN Health  recently discussed the answer.

Dr. Jennifer Shu of Children’s Medical Group explains that fluid needs can be determined by starting with the age of the baby.  One area of concern for babies and water drinking is that their immature kidneys sometimes cannot handle too much water inducing a condition called “water intoxication″.  Water intoxication occurs when a baby drinks too much water to the exclusion of their milk which can lead to a potentially dangerous electrolyte imbalance.

American Kids Showing Lower Lead Levels

The past year was plagued by stories of unwanted chemicals lurking in children’s productschild health, child development everywhere from toys to baby bottles. Although it may all seem rather hopeless, the media attention has brought some good out of the increased awareness. A new report found that kid’s lead levels are going down.
