Canadian Study Finds Low Vitamin D Levels in Pregnant Women Could Cause Cavities for Their Babies
Expecting women need vitamin D to keep their bones strong and their developing babies healthy.  A new study shed a different light on the sunshine vitamin, as the post explains vitamin D deficiency could lead to cavities in babies.  Canadian researchers measured the vitamin D levels of over 200 pregnant women.  Researchers found 90% of the mothers to be were deficient in vitamin D, which in turn led to cavities by 16 months of age for 135 of the babies.

Greek Study Finds Children May Build Tolerance to Egg Allergies
The Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology reports that 1 in 17 children suffers from a food allergy; hen’s eggs being the most common.  Eggs are ubiquitous in the food supply, particularly baked goods, making coping with this food allergy no easy task.  Mum Mum’s reveals new research found overcoming egg allergies might actually become a piece of cake.

Greek researchers consistently fed 94 children with egg allergies small pieces of a special cake containing eggs. By gradually increasing amounts of cake, the study found 90% of the children were able to eat the larger cake portion without an allergic reaction.  The fact that the eggs were cooked might provide a key factor, as high heat denatures egg proteins. Researchers conclude this is only a preliminary study and another control study in already in the works.

Baby Boom Reaches Record Numbers
Even though the costs of having a baby keep increasing and the economy is sinking, the number of births in the US has reached an all time high.   The post highlights the National Center for Health Statistics announcement that more babies were born in 2007 than any other year in US history.  This number even exceeds the original baby that peaked around 1957.   The new baby boom has historians perplexed as baby booms are typically associated with a flourishing economy.  A few plausible explanations for the baby boom include women having babies later in life, the increased number of unmarried mothers, as well as immigration.
