British Study Finds Short Breastfeeds Best for Baby
An age old dilemma many nursing mothers face is how long to nurse the baby for during a feeding. Traditional methods emphasized allowing the baby to nurse for about 10 minutes on each breast. Over the recent several years mothers have turned to a “baby led” method allowing the baby to dictate feeding times and lengths. Mum Mum’s explains shorter feeding times are actually better for baby.
Researchers who conducted the new British study found that over recent years, as the “baby led” method increased in popularity, babies’ weights decreased. Sixty-three exclusively breastfeeding mothers were divided into 2 groups; one group adhered to the baby led method of breastfeeding, while the other group was instructed to nurse the baby for no longer than 10 minutes on each breast. It turns out the babies of the mothers who limited nursing time had increased weight gain as well as a greater number of mothers who continued breastfeeding well over 12 weeks. While the results may seem a bit contradictory to popular belief, allowing the baby to nurse for extended periods of time on only one breast disrupts the mother’s milk production by interfering with hormone release. The study found babies actually get more milk with shorter feeding times.
Going Green for Earth Day
In honor of Earth Day and the celebration of Mother Earth, the post delves into companies and websites offering “how to” information guides to help mothers and babies go green.
Having a new baby usually causes a large shift in personal paradigms, with increased awareness of how we leave the planet for our children. In addition, it seems a global green consciousness is on the rise. For most families, taking baby steps towards creating a healthier household is most feasible. Mum Mum’s provides links to websites offering green alternatives to diapers, baby clothes, baby products, and organic baby food as well as how to guides.
Toys ‘R’ Us to Phase out Bisphenol A Baby Bottles
In an effort to keep readers abreast of new news regarding plastic baby bottle safety, the post highlights the companies that are already taking action to protect babies from harmful chemicals.
While it is certainly confusing for consumers to understand just what the verdict is on plastic baby bottle usage, it seems according to scientists and physicians alike that the jury is still out on what to do next. Despite the lack of cohesive guidelines for parents, several companies feel the preliminary studies finding bisphenol A (BPA) to be potentially harmful to infants are enough to take action. Toys ‘R’ Us revealed this week they will phase out all baby bottles containing BPA by the end of the year. Canada is the first country to announce a ban on the import and sales of all polycarbonate baby bottles containing BPA. Wal-Mart is also taking precautions and will not sell the baby bottles after 2009. While many people felt safe using the popular Nalgene brand reusable water bottles, the company also announced they are ceasing production of the bottles as they contain BPA.
