California Department of Public Health Study Casts Doubt On Vaccine-Autism Link
A recent vaccine recall added more doubt to parents already skeptical of the need for childhood immunizations. While many parents believe vaccines increase a child’s risk for autism, Mum Mum’s reports new research that may put a few worried minds at ease.
A new study by the California Department of Public Health found no substantial evidence that the autism rate is directly linked to vaccine use. A mercury-based preservative known as thimerosal, previously used in the majority of childhood vaccines, was believed to trigger autism in certain children. Use of thimerosal, however, was almost completely eradicated by 2001. After review of California state child statistics, the highest incidence rate of autism occurred in children born in 2000; after the use of thimerosal dropped significantly. Autism rates have continued to climb in California, prompting the new research. Although critics found the study limited, all parties agree more research is needed.
American Academy of Pediatrics Claims Breastfeeding May Prevent or Delay Allergies in High Risk Children
The New Year has brought a complete change of position for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) in regards to food allergies in infants. The post discusses the new position statement published in the January issue of the AAP journal.
The report suggests there is insufficient evidence to support the delaying of allergenic foods from the diet of high-risk infants. This goes against the AAP’s previous policy statement recommending omission of high allergen food from the diets of high-risk infants during the first year of life. There is a great deal of evidence, however, to support the AAP’s new statement that breastfeeding for at least the first 4 months of life can delay cow’s milk allergies, wheezing, and eczema when compared with infants who are formula fed. Despite the ever-changing world of science, it is still advised to avoid common allergens in infants for the first year of life.
Fatherhood Institute ICM Research Finds Mothers Believe “Dad is Just as Good as Me”
The post gives new dads even more reason to rejoice- a new survey found that mothers feel dads are just as good at taking care of the kids as they are.
A survey conducted by the Fatherhood Institute found that even though society deems fathers to be secondary care givers, 7 out 10 mothers feel dads are equally as important. In addition, 95% of women surveyed feel it is important for dads to spend quality time with their kids during the first 2 years of life. Both men and women agreed that mothers are automatically assumed to be the best for children, while fathers have to prove their parenting skills. The Fatherhood Institute’s new initiative, “What a Difference a Dad Makes” is geared towards making a father’s role in a child’s life more integral.
