Going Green has become a household phrase popping up everywhere from baby products to political platforms. Essentially, going green means to take individual steps to reduce harmful environmental effects through consumer habits.  People across the globe are jumping on the green bandwagon for both personal and environmental reasons.  If you still don’t understand all the hype, here are 6 reasons to go green:

1. Protect the environment: the green movement was initiated by the concern for the depletion of environmental resources; by protecting the earth you are saving natural resources for your children and grandchildren.

2. Improve diet: when it comes to food, earth friendly purchases are sustainable.  By following the principals of eating locally, organic, and with the seasons; you will most certainly reduce your intake of processed foods.

3. Save some green: while going green is often associated with paying more money for products, you will actually save in the long run.  Making your home energy efficient and reducing waste will save big bucks on household bills.  In addition, buying local produce and shopping the bulk foods isle will save money and reduce waste by eliminating excess packaging.

4. Safeguard your house:  with little ones around, reducing the amount of toxins in the home is important.  This not only applies to paints and carpeting choices, but also toys, bedding, and furniture.

5. Set a good example: By leading by example, you are teaching your kids, nieces, and nephews how to not be wasteful and care for the environment at an early age.  By middle school, being eco-conscious will be second nature for your kids.

6. Breathe easier:  Did you know that the air inside homes can be up to 10 times more polluted than the air outside?  That is a pretty scary thought considering environmental pollutants can increase the risk of eczema, allergies, and asthma.  By doing your best to go green you can breathe a little easier- literally.
