Tips for Managing Food Allergies

June 11th, 2010 by Colleen Hurley, RD, Certified Kid’s Nutrition Specialist

Identifying food allergies is half the battle, learning to live with them is the other half.  It is a slow and steady process with patience being most important, but here are a few other tips for managing food allergies:

Be alert: remain on guard for food allergies’ specific symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps; or upper respiratory symptoms like wheezing, chronic stuffy noses, or hives.

Stay  Savvy: It cannot be emphasized enough to not only read food labels, but also understand what those ingredients actually are or what they are derived from.  There are often many food allergens hidden in the ingredients list under various names, so take a look at http://www.kidswithfoodallergies.org/ for a comprehensive list.

Forewarned is forearmed: knowledge is critical for managing food allergies so remain a diligent label reader and phone ahead if dining out or at another person’s home.  Always keep a rescue medication or an epinephrine pen (if prescribed by your physician) on hand just in case of emergencies.

Talk to your doctor: even if symptoms go away, be sure to mention them to your child’s doctor.  Laboratory tests are available to ensure an adequate diagnosis of a true food allergy.  Many parents remove certain suspected allergens from a child’s diet in an attempt to alleviate symptoms but it is important to pinpoint the specific foods causing the problem so that a child is not missing out on vital nutrients.

Have a healthy respect: food allergies are often a family affair and although it is important to have control over the allergies, they do not have to control your family’s lives either.  With a little proper planning and due diligence, food allergies can be managed without being burdensome.
