With the economy not looking like it is going to recover anytime soon, the majority of people are turning inward and looking at their own familial economic status. The green movement was pushing at full steam, but with tightened family budgets the concern might be shifted more on being able to provide for your family instead of the environment. What if you could have your eco-friendly cake and eat it too?
Anyone who has a little baby knows they can be expensive. Between diapers, feedings, bottles, and clothes they seem to grow out of in a matter of days, it seems like an endless financial output. There are, however, a few baby products on the market that not only can save you money in the long run, but also save the vital resources we need to be saving for the future and our children. Here are 4 green baby products that can save you some green:
1. Cloth diapers: Landfills are currently laden with disposable diapers, which are often made with harsh chemicals that can irritate a baby’s skin. Cloth diapers feel better on your baby’s bottom, reduce waste and can save you anywhere from $2,500 - $5,000 per year! Although the initial cost of a cloth diaper kit seems high, averaging about $150- $200, disposable diapers will run about $2,700 per year.
2. Used baby furniture: Buying used baby furniture such as cribs and high chairs can save you a bundle in addition to reducing environmental waste- think of it as a means of recycling.
3. Gently used clothes: Babies grow out of clothes so fast it is hard to keep up with their growth sp urts. New baby clothes can be expensive and sometimes they only wear those new outfits once or twice so it is literally like throwing money away. Ecobusiness links provides a web list of stores across the US that feature “green” baby items like gently used clothes, books, and toys which will definitely save a little green.
4. Homemade baby food: The cost of baby food adds up over time, even though it doesn’t seem like a big expensive for the first few jars. In addition, by making your own baby you will know exactly what ingredients are in it, providing your baby with healthiest and freshest first foods. Wholesome Baby Food provides a penny by penny cost analysis of the savings of homemade baby food.
