CDC Says Current Measles Outbreak May Be Due to Parents Who Decide Not to Vaccinate
The vaccine debate rages on, as more and more parents are opting out of childhood vaccinations. Despite the lack of concrete evidence proving vaccines can be harmful, most physicians concur that the benefits outweigh the risk. As the post explains, mere speculation of possible side effects has been enough for parents to refuse vaccines.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) warns that 131 people have contracted measles form January to July of this year and worries that this number is particularly high since the year not yet over. This is the largest number of measles cases since 1996 and the CDC believes it is correlated to the increasing number of parents opting out of vaccinating their children. MSNBC took a different look at opting out, noting the potential stigmatization of the un-immunized child. However, if a child is indeed vaccinated the odds of contracting measles are quite small. The CDC found the current cases of measles affected people who were not vaccinated, traveled to other countries, and were under 20 years of age.
