U.S. Questions Baby Bottle Safety
The debate over plastic bottle safety shows no signs slowing down.  Following a controversial Today Show episode, consumers are even more confused about the facts regarding plastic bottle usage, including baby bottles.  Although no definitive facts have been found, the post explains the MSNBC report that states the federal National Toxicology Program found plastic bottles do indeed present a health risk.

Comprised of scientists from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Institutes of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the National Toxicology Program’s initial draft urges that the results “cannot be dismissed” even though the study was performed on animals.  New Jersey lawmakers are already taking action and passed a bill banning the sales of BPA products.  While environmental groups view the study as a welcome validation for years of concern, chemical manufacturers state consumers should not overreact, as more research is needed.  Mum Mum’s urges vulnerable populations such as expecting mums and infants to err to the side of caution and reduce plastic bottle usage.

Organoderm Safe for Pregnant Women and Children
It can be a challenge these days for mothers to find safe, effective personal care products they feel good about using for themselves and their children.  The Environmental Working Group states the average woman comes in contact with about 168 chemicals from the use of skin care products, many of which government agencies view as potentially harmful.

The post highlights a new product on the market named Organoderm that is both USDA and Circle of Green Certified Organic.   Developed by Dr. Edward Domanskis, the physician found that although meeting the stringent requirements of both certifying agencies was a challenge, providing safe products was a priority.  Circle of Green is an independent organic certifying agency that ensures products are not only free from chemicals, but also requires that the packaging is biodegradable.

National Initiative for Children’s Health Care Quality Find Drug Errors Hurt 1 in 15 Hospitalized Kids
Most parents put a great deal of faith in the doctors and nurses when their child is in the hospital, yet physicians make mistakes just like everyone else.  In an effort to discover just how many mistakes are made during care for hospitalized children, researchers reviewed 1,000 randomly chosen medical charts. As Mum Mum’s explains, researchers found more mistakes than they had predicted.

The National Initiative for Children’s Healthcare Quality researchers found approximately 11 “adverse drug effects” for every 100 children and about 2.5 “triggers” for a potential error per patient.  Safety experts advise the number of errors is probably much larger due to the fact only a select number of charts were reviewed.  Researchers created a tool to seek for “triggers” in a child’s medical chart that denoted instances in which administered medications came with a higher risk of problems.  This new research tool however, found 4% more medical errors than hospitals’ own tools. The good news is that 97% of the medication errors caused only temporary, minor discomforts.  The study also found that many errors could have been prevented and could have been detected sooner.  The Joint Commission issued an advisory to physicians to exercise more caution when administering drugs by calculating proper dosage and obtaining a child’s current weight.
