Leading Pediatrician Addresses the Future of Children’s Health

A prominent pediatrician announced that the future of children’s health is in dire need of attention.  In the keynote presentation for the Society for Biomolecular Science’s 14th Annual Conference, Dr. Jonathan Gitlan, MD will deliver a speech entitled “Child Health Research in the 21st Century: Obstacles and Opportunities”.  Mum Mum's reveals Dr. Gitlan addresses new insight into the link between the genetic coding of infants and adult diseases.

Dr. Gitlan discusses how exploring the genetic coding of infants while still in the womb could enable physicians to prevent many adult diseases.  In addition, Dr. Gitlan points out that funding for research identifying key factors for disease risk during childhood pales in comparison to the amount of money spent researching adult diseases.  Unfortunately, Dr. Gitlan points out, the current health status of our county’s children is pretty grim.  With more research on infants on a genetic level, doctors may provide long-term intervention for adult diseases and an early age.  Dr. Gitlan hopes to reveal through his research that by manipulating nutrition, we can ultimately understand how nutrition affects metabolism and thus metabolic disorders.

University of Michigan Study Finds Seat Belts Save Lives of Unborn Babies

While many women may still believe in the folklore that seatbelts can harm unborn babies, Mum Mum’s reports a new study found just the opposite to be true.  The University of Michigan reveals that seatbelts can save the life of an unborn baby.

Upon exploration of 57 car accidents involving women at least 20 weeks pregnant; the research team found that pregnant women could reduce the risk of injury to their baby by 84% when compared to women who did wear their seatbelts.  A fetus is also 4.5 times more likely to survive if mom is wearing her seatbelt.  Researchers went on to state all pregnant women should wear a seatbelt any time in a vehicle and offered pointers for proper seatbelt wearing.  Babies are dependent upon the health status of the mother so by protecting themselves, mothers are also protecting their babies.

Understanding Organic Food Labels

The ever-evolving lingo found on food labels these days could make grocery shopping quite a chore.  While eating organic has many health benefits, especially for babies, understanding what exactly is organic and what the labels mean is a whole other story.  The post explains that since not all foods are created, or labeled for that matter, equally it is important to become and educated shopper.

Standards for organic labeling have become more streamlined in recent years through the USDA.  The National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) oversees the National Organic Program (NOP) which implements and regulates national production, handling, and labeling of organic foods.  The NOP also accredits any organic certifying agents.  By setting stringent regulations, consumers can know when they see the USDA Organic seal on foods exactly what they are getting.  USDA organic foods do not contain harmful chemicals, GMOs, sewage sludge or growth hormones in organic livestock.  While adding the USDA seal is a voluntary action by food companies, the USDA can take action on companies who falsely use the label on foods that are not organic.
