Gluten Free Recipe of the Month: Orange Quinoa with Fruit
The post highlights another gluten free grain, quinoa, in a nutrient dense recipe. Optimizing the fruit in season this time of year, this dish is packed with protein and antioxidants.
Once viewed as a sacred grain by the Inca for over 7,000 years, Spanish conquerors demoted quinoa to animal feed status making it almost obsolete. It was imported into the US in the 1980’s and is now widely available at health food stores. Quinoa is the only grain that is a complete protein and is loaded with B vitamins and iron. Highly versatile, quinoa can be cooked in a variety of ways and is a staple for celiacs as it is also gluten free.
Sepracor Inc Survey Finds Pediatric Allergies Takes Toll on Kids Too
Springtime signals the onset of warmer weather and longer days, but for many it also signals allergy season. While many adults know allergies can cause sleepless nights and drowsy days, those symptoms can also affect kids. Mum Mum’s explains a new survey found allergies take their toll on kids as well.
Sepracor Inc, a pharmaceutical company, provided the survey that discovered allergies can not only disrupt a child’s daytime activities, but also their quality of sleep. Before this survey, the severity of children’s allergies was merely hypothesized based on adult symptoms. Parents of 500 children with allergies, and the same number of parents of children who did not, were asked a series of questions along with about 500 physicians who specialize in nasal allergies. About 40% of parents said their child’s allergies hinder their performance in school and ¾ of respondents found spring to be the harshest for allergies. To help your child’s allergies, it is important to keep their immune system healthy be providing a diet rich in fruits and vegetables while keeping processed foods to a minimum.
International Congress on Women’s Health Finds Motherhood Makes Women Braver, Faster, and More Laid Back
Most new mothers feel exhausted with the lack of sleep, in addition to the stress of caring for a newborn baby. Even though you may feel you are not as sharp as you were before becoming a mother, Mum Mum’s explains just the opposite may be true.
New research, presented at the International Congress on Women’s Health in Melbourne, reveals motherhood is actually good for the brain. Having a baby causes neurological changes in a woman’s brain that not only ensures she is a good mother, but also boosts behaviors that help a mother protect and care for her young. Based on a series of studies on rats who are mothers, the research found that the mother’s were more focused, had increased memory, and were more courageous while remaining less stressed than the non-mother rats. By measuring brain activity, the study found a mother’s brain becomes more pliable in order to respond to the demands of survival. This provides hope for women who may be lacking specific neurotransmitters that when given a boost of the brain chemical, can improve their mothering skills.
