Child Development: 9-12 Months

The excitement continues as Mum Mum’s follows the stages of baby development, helping parents understand what to expect.  During this particular stage of baby development, 9 to 12 months of age, some very important milestones are in occurring in a baby’s life.

Social awareness is increasing for a baby at this age, as interaction with parents becomes an imperative part of  their day.   With fine motor skills increasing, parents can expect to see their baby moving around quite a bit more and should prepare to baby proof the house.   Since babies at this stage put everything they can pick up into their mouths, it is important to make sure the house is safe guarded.  Parents may even hear their baby’s first words during this time; or at least more concrete sounds than baby may have made in the past.   Lastly, parents can help with child’s development by providing lots of love, interaction, and playtime together.

University of Michigan Survey Finds Consumer Alerts Aren’t Enough to Protect Kids

Much of the news these days has been related to worrisome headlines detailing toy recalls and potentially hazardous materials in children’s products.  You may be one of many parents who has simply decided to avoiding reading these headlines, yet that may mean you miss out on some public health advisories.  The post explains that a new survey discovered as many as  1 in 7 parents were unaware of recent child safety advisories.

The University of Michigan  C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health revealed valuable insight into the minds of American parents.  The majority of Americans feel that the government is not doing enough to protect our children and feel that the government should ensure products are safe before they hit the market.  The survey also revealed that any legislation stepping up safety policies for children’s products would be met with overwhelming support.  In addition, many parents were not aware of the recent advisory regarding over the counter cold medicine usage, but those parents who did heard took action.

“Food Superallergies”: The First Italian Study Proves That They Can Be Cured with the Incriminated Allergen

Exciting news for food allergy suffers has arrived.  Some children may grow out of early childhood food allergies, but many do not and cope with a lifetime of food avoidance.  Mum Mum’s explains that a new, breakthrough technique may help children overcome food allergies.

A new study by the medical team of the Pediatric Clinic of the University of Trieste reveals that  may be able to ingest previously dangerous foods without suffering severe allergic reactions.  The technique involved re-educating the cells of  what researchers deemed “super allergic” children.  Trying to find an alternative treatment for food allergies that surpassed strict dietary regime, researchers were able to help 36% of the children in the study resume a normal diet.  The breakthrough technique involves 2 phases.  The first phase is conducted in the hospital, in case any severe reactions occur, where children receive milk in increasing amounts in rapidly increasing intervals.  Once the children can tolerate about 5ml of milk, they are sent home and the parents continue to gradually increase amounts of milk but at a much slower pace.  There are some risks with this method and researchers advise to not attempt this without medical supervision.
