University of California Study Finds Correcting Poor Vision Can Help Preschoolers Performance
Mum Mum’s reports the findings of a new study that claims to have discovered a reason why some preschoolers perform poorly in school- impaired vision. Preschoolers with impaired vision scored significantly lower on developmental exams than those with normal vision.
Researchers from the University of California, San Diego studied 70 children. Of those 70 children, 35 had normal eyesight while the others had poor eyesight. The children for the study were discovered by Shiley Eye Clinic’s mobile unit, which not only screens preschool children for vision problems but also provides eyeglasses for low income children. All the children in the study were given 2 exams that are indicative of future school performance: the Beery-Buktenica Developmental Test of Visual-Motor Integration (VMI) and the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Revised (WPPSI-R). Children with impaired vision scored below the norm on both exams. Corrective eyeglasses were given to the preschoolers with poor eyesight, and 6 weeks later all 70 children re-took the exams. Upon retesting, both groups of children had the same scores on the VMI. Researchers hope this study will increase early vision screening for preschoolers while promoting the benefits of early intervention.
University of Missouri Study Warns Against Heating Plastic Baby Bottles
Many parents felt left in the dark about new warnings for plastic baby bottles. The post details a new study by University of Missouri which found the real danger in using plastic baby bottles comes from heating the bottles prior to feeding time.
Researchers found “surprisingly large” amounts of BPA leaching out into the heat-tested bottles. When heated baby bottles leach bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical that poses serious health risks for infants. Health risks include certain forms of diabetes, feminization in boys, early puberty onset in girls, as well as breast and prostate cancer. Currently, 90% of baby bottles in the US are made with BPA. The University of Missouri researchers claim that parents who use plastic baby bottles put their infants at risk for medical, reproductive, and developmental problems in the future. Consumer groups were not surprised by the study results as several animal studies have found BPA to cause developmental problems in animals and hope to eliminate future use of harmful chemicals in baby bottle manufacturing. A spokesperson for baby bottle manufacturers, however, claims the news is only meant to scare parents. To help protect infants, parents should discard bottles when they begin to look cloudy and/or after several uses. Also, it is important to not heat the bottles or liquids over 80 degrees. In addition, parents can seek out BPA-free or glass baby bottles.
Gluten Free Recipe of the Month: Teff Flour Brownies
Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the post features a delectable gluten free brownie recipe. Not only is the recipe gluten-free, but it is also free of other common allergens including dairy, eggs, and peanuts. These brownies are suitable for celiacs, but are also sure to satisfy anyone with a sweet tooth.
Teff is a cereal grain native to Southwestern Africa and Arabia, which has been used for thousands of years. Thanks to some experimental farmers, teff has become more widely known in the 21st century. This highly versatile grain can be ground into flour and used in baked goods, as in this recipe, or eaten whole by boiling or steaming. Far more nutritious than many other grains, teff is loaded with iron, calcium, and amino acids. The recipe is easy to make and provided by Mum Mum’s own dietitian.
