Journal of Personality Study Finds Child’s Personality May Be Set by Preschool
Your toddler’s budding personality may be more of a snapshot of their future disposition than you think. As Mum Mum’s reports, a recent study reported in the February issue of the Journal of Personality discovered that certain personality traits stay with a child into adulthood.
The study tracked 103 children for 19 years. After interviewing parents and teachers of the children to get a basis for the children’s dispositions at around age 4, scientists maintained contact via parental questionnaires. Of the 3 personality types: resilient, over controlled, and under controlled, resilient children shifted more easily into adult roles. No need to worry, most of the children studied turned out just fine. The wallflowers grew to be a little more assertive, and the aggressive children calmed down a bit. The most important factor responsible for guiding the children into adult roles was part time employment, as these children learned valuable life lessons.
Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology Study Finds Eczema Still On the Rise Worldwide
The post highlights a new study by the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology finding environmental factors may be responsible for the rise in the rate of eczema. Environmental factors include everything from pollens to pollutions as well as extreme heat or cold.
Allergy experts across the world worked together in an attempt to pinpoint the reason for the current rise in eczema cases. Reviewing the symptoms of half a million 6 to7 year old and 13-14 year old, researchers discovered that environmental factors were key in the condition’s expression. Scientists believe that eczema is an inherited condition, but environmental factors appear to increase the risk. The good news from the study was that for 13 to 14 year olds, cases of eczema seem to be tapering off in places where eczema is typically predominate. The bad news, however, was that eczema cases are continuing to rise for 6 to 7 years old, especially in underdeveloped countries.
Arizona Department of Health Offices Adapt To Motherhood
After having a new baby, returning to work can be a struggle. Not only is it difficult to leave your newborn, but you also have to find adequate daycare. Mum Mum’s explains how the Arizona Department of Public Health found a solution to that dilemma- bring your baby to work. The health offices allow new parents to bring their infants to work until they are 6 months old.
The program initiated in 2000 when an employee, who was nursing, asked if she could bring her infant to work with her. The office complied and it worked out so well, there are now 50 babies currently throughout the Department of Public Health. When a father asked to bring his newborn to work, the office complied and expanded to the program to remove the nursing requirement altogether. Even skeptics have come around finding it really “sends home” the messages the health department advocates. Employees do need to sign a contract ensuring their work must still get done and if the baby is fussy, they need to take them away from the work space. The program is not for everyone however, as some mothers felt they could not get their work done. Currently, there are 70 programs like this nationwide.
