When a new baby arrives, fathers often feel left out of the parenting picture. Fathers everywhere can rejoice; a new study by the Fatherhood Institute finds that fathers are equally as important in a baby’s life as the mother.
Even though the role of fathers may be deemed as secondary by much of society, 7 out 10 mothers feel dads are just as equipped for parenting as they are. Last month, over 1,000 people were surveyed in regards to parental responsibility. The findings revealed that 68% of mothers say that dad is equally skilled at taking care of the kids as they are, and 95% of women feel it is important for fathers to spend quality time with their children during the first 2 years of life. In addition, both men and women agree that society assumes mothers are good for children, while fathers have to prove their worth.
The Fatherhood Institute is a UK-based organization aimed at nurturing a father’s integral role of a child’s life. The institute has launched a new campaign coinciding with the new research entitled “What a Difference a Dad Makes”. Goals for the new initiative include allowing fathers to stay the night in the hospital with new mothers, parental education, family professionals engaging with both fathers and mothers, and having fathers read with their children in all primary schools.
Although fathers tend to take a back seat to mothers, more and more fathers today have an increased desire to be active parents. To increase their role, fathers can take part in parenting and childbirth classes as well as sharing in the care of a baby from the beginning. Fathers provide more than just half of a child’s genetic material. They provide a second set of hands, a male role model, a teacher of skills, and best of all- another source of unconditional love.
