This is a selection of recent popular blogs from Mum Mum, where parents can find information on everything to do with babies and parenting with an emphasis on health and nutrition.
USDA’s New MyPyramid Helps Provide Nutrient Information for Pregnancy
Mum Mum’s recent blog post on the New MyPyramid explains how pregnant and nursing mothers may finally have a simple way to ensure they are getting all the nutrients they need. As Secretary of Agriculture Chuck Conner states: “During this time of life, proper nutrition for mom and baby are critical”.
With the new MyPyramid, expecting or breastfeeding mothers submit basic information such as height, weight, baby’s due or birth date and are instantly provided with personalized meal guidelines and dietary needs. Information on food safety, breastfeeding, and special health needs can also be found on the new MyPyramid website.
Baby Videos Not So Educational
Upon review of educational toys, Mum Mum brought to light an interesting new study that found videos aimed at increasing cognitive and language skills in infants may in fact do just the opposite. The study found that for each hour per day spent watching baby videos; babies learned several less words than those who did not watch videos. Educational baby toys, however, remain an important part of a child’s development.
Toys are the way babies learn and can assist in brain development. As rapid brain development occurs within the first 3 years of life, it is important to provide educational toys that are designed for specific stages of infant development. Parental interaction is also a vital component for healthy child development and can help increase learning.
China Attempts to Mend Toy Making Procedures Recall
In the advent of the recent toy recalls from China, Mum Mum helps shed light on what parents can expect in the aftermath. With companies putting price before quality and safety, our children have been put at risk. The Chinese Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine is expected to enforce new toy making laws including the mandatory closure of companies that are not abiding by new regulations.
Although Chinese officials say new laws could hurt both importers and exporters, they also claim the US should share in the responsibility. According to the officials, the US has not been strict on examining imports and the demand for fad toys are sending US companies oversees for cheap labor. Yet saving a few bucks has caused our children to be exposed to dangerous levels of lead. Mattel, the toy maker behind recently recalled toys, has promised increased safety checks. As Mum Mum suggests, purchasing US made toys and buying organic whenever possible can help parents ensure quality and safety for their children.
